RIVER
Today is the day that Iâm supposed to check my progress with the doctor again, and I canât wait to show him how many steps I can walk.
I wasnât even supposed to be speaking full sentences at this point in my recovery, but here I am, able to do almost anything that a person without a traumatic brain injury can do. I would give anything for Adas to be here, seeing me take my first steps again after so long, but he canât be here for everything. I know that in my heart, but itâs hard to accept at times like these.
Today, Iâm being escorted to the doctorâs office to see a new doctor who is to take over my care during my recovery. She isnât able to make house calls like the old man who had been in her place, but Iâm more than a little bit excited to be out of the house again.
Thereâs nobody here to accompany me to the doctorâs office, which feels unsafe and nerve-racking for me. I know that part of walking again means Iâll have to be independent, but my nerves take over, and I begin to breathe rapidly right before I wheel myself up the ramp into the medical van.
âAre you alright? Weâre not going very far. It should only be about twenty minutes,â the driver says in a helpful, sympathetic tone.
Twenty minutes by van means it could be more like an hour in a wheelchair. What if I get left behind? What if someone forgets about me? Adas isnât here, and Iâm sure heâd hate to have to come back and get me when heâs in the middle of an important mission.
Above all, I do wish he was here more than anything.
For the entire ride to the hospital, I stare out the window imagining myself running alongside the van. Iâd give anything to be able to run like that, keeping up with the speed of a van without faltering. Maybe when I can walk fully again, that will be a goal of mine. Iâll never reach it, but Iâll keep chasing it.
Arriving at the hospital feels surreal. I know Iâve been here before; this is where I stayed for two weeks after the accident. I wasnât awake for it, but I still feel it. Returning with all of my progress made feels bittersweet.
I take an elevator to the thirteenth floor after following at least ten signs leading me to the proper department. This place is so huge that Iâm willing to bet that patients get lost all the time and miss their appointments.
When I reach the thirteenth floor, the neurology clinic, I canât help but gaze over the view of the water from this high up. I have weird flashbacks, almost like déjà vu, as I look out at the water.
Was I here before?
Have I ever seen the water like this?
I wheel myself over to the registration desk, feeling self-conscious about how short my chair makes me. Now that Iâve stood
